چکیده

The effects of plan asymmetry on the earthquake response of one story systems are identified by comparing the dynamic response of an asymmetric plan system and the corresponding symmetric-plan system for a wide range of system parameters-uncoupled lateral vibration period, uncoupled torsional-to-lat eral frequency ratio, stiffness eccentricity, and yield factor. Elastic as weI! as in elastic systems are studied. For the latter, two values of the strength eccentricity are considered: equal to the stiffness eccentricity and zero; the latter is represen tative of code-designed buildings. Based on the response results for a wide range of system parameters, this paper identifies how the structural response is affected by plan asymmetry and how these effects differ between elastic and inelastic sys tems. It is shown that the response of inelastic systems is affected less by plan asymmetry compared to elastic systems. Between the two types of inelastic systems considered, the response of strength-symmetric systems is affected by plan asym metry general!y to a smaller degree compared to systems with equal strength and stiffness eccentricities.

Seismic Retrofitting of Steel Frames with Buckling Restrained and Ordinary Concentrically Bracing Systems with Various Strain Hardening and Slenderness Ratios

The present study assesses the seismic performance of steel moment resisting frames (SMFs) retrofitted with different bracing systems. Two structural configurations were utilized: ordinary concentrically braces (OCBFs), buckling-restrained braces (BRBFs). A 7-story and 18-story steel perimeter SMFs were designed with insufficient lateral stiffness to satisfy code drift limitations in high seism...

A Phenomenological Study on Inelastic Torsion Caused By Nonlinear Behavior Changes during Earthquake Excitations

Torsion of many symmetric structures, which were designed based on the seismic codes, is due to their asymmetricity induced during inelastic behavior. Although the structure was designed symmetrically assuming elastic based criteria, different factors such as material inconsistency in structure, construction details discrepancy and construction errors may result in asymmetric behavior in inelas...

EvALVATION OF TORSIONAL PROVISIONS IN SEISMIC CODES

The effects of plan asymmetry on the earthquake response of code designed, one-story systems are identified with the objective of evaluating how well these effects are represented by torsional provisions in building codes. Evaluation of the Seismic Response of Single-Story RC Frames under Biaxial Earthquake Excitations

This paper summarizes the lessons learned from a full-scale test on two RC frame prototypes that have recently been tested on LNEC shaking-table using four pairs of biaxial synthetic ground motion records during 15WCEE Conference (2012). The reference structures are two single-story RC frames which are geometrically identical but with different reinforcement details. The simplified inelastic mo...

Two Important Issues Relevant to Torsional Response of Asymmetric 8-Story RC BuildingDesigned with Direct Displacement based Design Approach

Direct displacement based design (DDBD) is a conceptual framework that directly design a structure to achieve an expected performance level under specified seismic intensity. In this study, two important issues relevant to torsional response of mass eccentric 8-story RC building designed with DDBD approach are investigated. These issues are including the effects of unbalanced mass distribution ...
